June 18, Trach Arm
Another really good day! We left Tracy
Arm Cove about 8:30 and turned into Tracy Arm.
Our plan was to go up the 20 plus miles of the arm to the two Sawyer
glaciers if ice didn’t stop us and go to Juneau if it did. Almost immediately we encountered three
whales feeding and stopped to watch them.

The day was sunny and warm, the
wind was calm, and the ice didn’t stop us until we were half a mile from the
north Sawyer glacier. We could see most
of the glacier, but just couldn’t get close enough to see where it entered the
water. We were able to get up close
enough to the south Sawyer glacier to see the whole thing. At both glaciers Cash got in the dinghy and
took pictures of Hobbit.

Yosemite has nothing on the
grandeur of Tracy Arm. Pictures can’t do
the scenery justice, but here are some which at least hint at the beauty. We returned to Tracy Arm Cove for the night.

Cash couldn’t resist
collecting some of the glacial ice floating around us so we could use it in our
drinks. In spite of being fished out of
salt water, the ice was really good.
